The Beginning

A little background about my Blog. I live with my girlfriend of three years in Toronto. S was diagnosed with Celiac disease in September of 2009 and we have done our best to covert to the Gluten Free lifestlye since then. Celiac is not something I had much (if any) knowledge of before S was told she had it and it has been a tough conversaion.

After a tough first few months and a ton of research into the gluten-free lifestyle, we are doing very well and have found many places that can accomdate her. We are now enjoying the gluten-free restaurants that Toronto has to offer and experimenting with the foods we love and figuring out how we can make them gluten-free.

I thought it might be interesting to share our experiences with anyone who might be interested.

After attempting to order off of non-gluten friendly menus, we decided that we really needed to start visiting places that specialized in the gluten-free lifestyle (or at least were aware of it).

The first restaurant we tried was "Four" at the corner of Wellington and Bay. After a few wrong turns, with the aid of our trusty Blackberries we finally found a nice looking restaurant in the basement of an office tower. We had called ahead to discuss my S's needs, so when we arrived they were already aware and very helpful (a nice change from having to explain what Celiac is). Our waiter was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and about Celiac disease.

We started off with gluten-free appetizers (spicy chicken soup for me and a beet salad with goat cheese for my girlfriend). I tend to like spicy things, but the soup was a bit over-spiced. My girlfriend LOVED the salad. Next we had our mains - I had gluten-full pasta with shrimp with a delicious walnut pesto sauce and my girlfriend had wild sablefish with vegetables. She really enjoyed it and said that the fish had a fantastic texture - light and fluffy like butter.

Four had excellent desserts too - they are small servings in shot glasses so they are basically guilt-free. Most were gluten-full like tiramisu and other mini-cakes, but my girlfriend had fruit pieces in a sweet sugary sauce and she said it was really fresh tasting and tangy. Overall, a great meal.

More to come on our next adventure!
